Martin Hughes & Cathy Scanlon
Martin Hughes, a proud native of Derradda—the home of the renowned Derradda Set—carries on a family legacy deeply rooted in traditional Irish dance. His grandfather played a key role in the revival of this iconic set, and Martin has continued to build upon this heritage. He began his set dancing journey in Westport under Phylis Kelly, where he trained for the Under-12 Set at the Fleadh Cheoil. Later, he joined the Caroline O'Malley Set Dancers, competing at various Fleadh levels and honing his craft. Martin has brought his passion and expertise to international audiences, teaching in Germany and at the esteemed Willie Clancy Summer School.
Cathy Scanlon, from Glenhest, began her set dancing career with the Caroline O'Malley Set Dancers, where she competed and excelled through the Fleadh age categories. Together with Martin, Cathy achieved tremendous success at the senior level under the banner of Cuilmore CCÉ, competing in the Half Set Competition alongside Martin’s sister Aishling and Cathy’s brother Liam. Their team’s hard work culminated in an All-Ireland victory in the Senior Half Set Competition in 2008.
During the winter months, Martin teaches set dancing in Derradda, with Cathy stepping in to teach as needed. Both bring extensive experience, a shared passion for set dancing, and a commitment to preserving this rich tradition. Martin and Cathy are thrilled to be part of the John McFadden Festival this year, eager to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with participants of all levels.
