This lecture will report on recent archival research into the people and places of John McFadden's life – from his early days outside Newport through emigration to Cleveland and later Chicago, where his musical reputation and legacy were established. We'll trace his Irish and American families, and look at those who influenced McFadden's music throughout his life and comprised his musical community in Chicago. His significant contributions to the hugely influential music collections of the early 1900s will also be reviewed, and we'll listen to his virtuosity through some of his surviving recordings. This Lecture will be delivered by Pat Reynolds. Everyone welcome.
